DIY eReader Case! (with video!)

A while back, I wrote about my new found love for eReaders.  I received a Kindle for Christmas and have been somewhat addicted since.  If you don't have one, I highly suggest getting one, I love mine.  You can pick up a Kindle these days for as little as $114!  In addition to the Kindle being more affordable, there are thousands of books available to read for free.

So now that you have an eReader, you need something to protect it.  Covers run from $30 on up.  I love my reader, but I really don't feel like spending a lot on a cover that I may want to change up in the future.  I have a sleeve style cover that my husband got me with my Kindle, but I've been wanting something that helps me hold and read a bit easier - something a bit more like holding a real book.  After looking at several covers on Amazon & Etsy, I decided to make my own.  It took me just a couple of hours from start to finish and I couldn't be happier!

If video instructions aren't for you, check out the step by step guide below!

Find a book that is a little thicker than your eReader and about an inch larger in each direction (or bigger to be cut to size).  Remove the insides of the book and measure for cutting if needed.  To give you an idea of size, my Kindle is 7.5"x5", so I cut the book so that the back panels measured 8.5"x6"
Once you've cut your cover to size, use tape to reinforce the spine and all of the edges.  This will also help give the cut edges a smooth finish.

Next you'll want to select a fabric you like and cover your book cover. It doesn't need to be very neat as the edges will all be covered up, do try to keep it somewhat tidy though, so that you don't end up with big bumps or ripples.  I found that hot glue worked very well for this.

You also want to place a wide strip of fabric up the center of the book, be sure to fold under the top and bottom of the fabric to hide the edges.  These will be visible.
After you've covered the case portion, you'll want to get some paper board for the inside cover.  Something with a sturdiness like a cereal box or other product box will work well.  Standard cardboard would be too thick for this.  I also cut two pieces of felt to help provide some 'cushion' for my Kindle.  My panels are 8"x5.5".

Use craft glue to attach the felt to the paper board and then cover it with your fabric of choice, just like you did the outer cover.  Once you've completed that, you can add your elastic.
You'll want to use elastic that is approximately 4 inches or so in length.  I used my sewing machine to securely attach the elastic.  You could use hot glue, but be sure that it is secure!  If you want to add a closure of some sort, you can do that now (see the loop on the right?)  After I attached my elastic loop, I attached a bead to the front of my cover using a seam ripper to carefully poke two holes through my cover to thread a needle and string through to secure my bead.
After you've completed this step, you are nearly home free!  Load up the backside of your panels with glue to attach them to the inside of your cover.  I used craft glue all over the back, and then before attaching them, I went around the edges with hot glue to give it instant hold.

Insert your eReader and enjoy your brand new cover!  If you made a closure on your cover, I recommend allowing the glue to dry for a day before using it.

Now you can enjoy your eReader in style (your imagination is the limit!)  You'll have the wonderful feeling of holding a book in your hand and what's nice, is that this cover can even fold backwards while you are reading if you choose to do that.

This is a fun way to have several covers (if your an accessory fan), to give a personalized gift or simply to have for practical reasons.

I had a lot of fun making this cover and I just love it.  I hope this post helps you make your own.  If you try it, please post link your pictures or post them to our Facebook page.  I'd love to see them!

Read Green: My Guilty Pleasure

For Christmas, my dear, loving husband made an enormous, yet generous mistake.  He bought me a Kindle.  Okay so it's not really a mistake, but it's barely the middle of January and I think I'm on my eighth book.  Do you have any idea how tempting (and easy!) it is to read with any book you want at your fingertips?  No ordering and waiting for the mail, no running to the bookstore.  It's amazing.

I have seen e-readers for a while now but the price point has been just out of my comfort range.  These puppies are now just $139.  Oh and there are thousands of books that you can read for free!  Here are just a few sites to get you started: Project Gutenberg, Manybooks.net, Amazon - here and here ... even Google.

So, when I first heard of e-readers, I was a little skeptical.  While I get the convenience of reading anywhere, I have read books on my computer before, and it's just not as fun - especially if you're like me and your eyes don't like it for long periods of time.  When I first opened my Kindle there was a startup image that I thought was some sort of display film to be removed.  It turned out that no, that's the screen!  The E Ink Pearl technology in these e-readers is amazing.  It honestly looks like I'm reading from the page of a book (minus paper grain).  Another of the (many) big bonuses with the E Ink Pearl technology, is that unlike some e-readers - you can read this in bright sunlight, etc. without being unable to see the page due to glare.  I don't have an iPad (or similar device) to provide my own photo but the image found here (and to your right) shows a comparison of an iPad vs Kindle in direct sunlight - the iPad is at max brightness.

Below are some images from my Kindle.  First up is one of the many screensavers you will see when you turn off your Kindle.
Personally, I love these but there are methods (ways around) of changing these as well (According to Amazon - Customer Service does not support or provide instructions for adding custom images to your Kindle to be used as screen savers. However, should you choose to do this on your own it will not void your warranty.)
Here you can see my Kindle up against our local newspaper.
Above you can see the font options.  You can adjust the font, line spacing, words per line and screen orientation.  From this menu you can even -get this- have it read to you, fast, slow, normal - male or female.

I have to admit that I've never been a big reader.  I have read a few book series in my life, but now that I have my Kindle, I can't seem to stop.  I am loving it.  With the Kindle, there is no waste.  No books that will be read once and then put onto a shelf, never to be read again - or if their lucky donated.  In 2005, 3.1 billion books were sold in the US 1.  Imagine if each of those were replaced by a digital version.

In addition to saving paper, the Kindle saves energy.  Of course it has been manufactured, but just once, and with the wireless feature turned off - the Kindle can last an entire month on a single charge.  How amazing is that!  I don't see how you can go wrong with one of these.  I just wish I had one sooner!

There is so much more that I'd like to talk about, but I suppose this is getting a bit long so we'll address them later.

Do you have an e-reader?  How do you like it?  Do you have questions about getting an e-reader?  Perhaps I can help.  Leave your comments below; I'd love to hear your thoughts!

Give your baby your very best!

When our son (our oldest) was on the way my mother encouraged me to breastfeed.  I remember her nursing my youngest brother, so the idea was not foreign to me.  I think most of me was just mortified that my mother was talking about my breasts.  I told her I wasn't sure and made any excuse not to talk about it.

Then he was born.  He was perfect and amazing and couldn't imagine giving him any less than my very best.  I nursed... and it was hard.  He had a terrible latch and I was so uncomfortable.  I wanted to do it right which seemed to make things harder most of the time.  I ended up pumping and feeding and trying to nurse for more than a month.  Finally one beautiful day he got it and we never looked back.

Breastfeeding your baby is an amazing experience and it's largely possible because of amazing support and understanding.  I hope that today's package can help someone with that :)

I am currently nursing our third baby.  You'd think by now I would be much more comfortable with myself.  Sadly I'm not.  I am shy and easily embarassed.

Nursing covers have become quite popular, so I decided to get one.  The first one I got was the type that covers up baby.  None of my babies have been a fan of being covered while eating.  I can't say I blame them.  When I saw the covers offered by BabyBond I was very interested.  They generously sent me the Couture to try out and offered up one for an event too.  As you can see (to the left) it does not cover baby.  It covers you.  This cover rolls up very small and can easily be tossed into a purse or diaper bag.  It also had directions printed right on it (hidden near the shoulder), which is really handy, especially if you store it away for another baby or pass it on to a friend.  If you would like a BabyBond cover, head over to their site and be sure to use code effblog to get 25% off!

I think my absolute favorite nursing must-have is my Artsy Fartsy Foo Foo hemp nursing pads.  I have talked about them before, but these babies are seriously amazing.  I've used several brands of disposable pads.  I wasn't fond of any and I hated spending so much on boxes of them every few weeks, not to mention the waste.  Then I tried Milk Maids.  They were fabulous.  They were thin and didn't show through all of my clothes like the others.  They absorb plenty for me and I save a ton.  If you'd like to get some of these check out her shop on the 5th and 20th of each month.  Be quick though, when she stocks they fly!

As a nursing mother convenience is key, but so is comfort.  A good nursing bra is great, but who wants more layers?  Less is more with nursing tank tops!  I was recently able to try out a fantastic one put out by Medela.  It is super comfortable.  I have a larger chest and actually find this to be much more supportive than others I have tried.  It does not have a traditional shelf in it, but some extra layers and crossovers that provide support.  The lace detail also makes it nice for layering.  It comes in black and white.  I got it in black, but I think the white would be great for the upcoming summer months.

As you sit down to snuggle up and nurse your baby, something you should consider is organic blankets and bedding.  Your baby spends 60% of its first year sleeping in bedding. Your baby’s skin is thinner and more porous than an adult’s skin, which ensures your baby is even more vulnerable to all of the toxic chemicals found in traditional materials.

There are all sorts of beautiful organic items, but some of my favorite designs come from Ty and Lumi Organics.  Their fabrics are sourced, designed and made locally in the Vancouver Lower Mainland. Their new line of prints are exclusive to Ty and Lumi Organics.  That is what I love most.  Their pieces are truly special and not something that you'd see just anywhere.  You can spot my baby snuggled up in her blanket in the nursing picture up top.  The blanket is beautifully made and the fabric is so soft and gentle.  It washed up great after my daughter spilled her cup on it too.

I love blankets and this one has quickly made it's way into my favorites.  It is so soft and I just adore the pattern.  I can picture buying these as a gift for a special baby :)

One great help in child nutrition is Feeding Baby Green, a book by Dr.Greene.  It helps you start giving your baby great nutrition even before he's born.  Then baby is born, there is some great information on breastfeeding.  For example, did you know that: "Immediately after birth, babies' sense of smell is far more powerful than our own.  They can perform a feat that we cannot: by smell alone, they an select the breast milk unique to their mothers." This is in comparison to an adult trying to discern between two.  To me, that speaks volumes.

Later in the book it talks about introducing foods, what foods are best and how to help your child continue with a love for healthy foods.  There is even a great chart in the back to help you document what foods you try.  It looks like fun!

Now it's your chance to win todays items :)  The winner of this day will win a baby friendly nursing cover from BabyBond, my favorite Milk Maids from Artsy Fartsy Foo Foo, a super comfy nursing cami from Medela, a beautiful boutique style blanket from Ty and Lumi Organics, and a copy of Feeding Baby Green, courtesy of Wiley Publishers.

Be Fashionably Green

When I started looking for products for this guide I wanted to help replace some of the things that we normally buy that just aren't as Earth friendly.  Doing that doesn't always mean that it has to be new.  After all, isn't one of the easiest ways to be green to Reuse?

With that in mind I approached Children's Orchard.  Children's Orchard is America's Finest resale/retail boutiques, featuring brand-name, top quality, gently used and new kid's clothing, toys, furniture, equipment, books and accessories!

They pay cash for your kid's gently used clothing, toys, furniture and accessories. Selling Your Items at Children's Orchard is as easy as 1... 2... 3

Children's orchard has offered a $25 gift card for you to go buy some gently used, but totally adorable children's items.  Shop online or find the store one nearest you by using the locator on their main page.

Dr.Greene, a pediatrician, along with an indispensable team of pediatric and health experts offer medical expertise, parental experience and a focus on healthy living.  In Raising Baby Green, Dr.Greene teams up with a consumer health reporter and an author of parenting books to give parents eco-friendly options for pregnancy, birth, and parenting. Everything from choosing the best diapers to selecting nontoxic nursery paint and organic baby food is offered along with commonsense advice about diaper rash and food allergies.

This book is truly a great reference.  It includes lots of great, easy to follow tips on creating a green and healthy lifestyle for you and your little one.  Everything from pregnancy to nursery decorating, from food to washing up.  This book offers steps in bite sized bits.  You can easily pick and choose what works for you every step of the way.

Before you head out with your baby, you need something fabulous to tote your new book and goodies in.  That's where Danielle Elizabeth Designs comes in.  She makes absolutely beautiful (and versatile) diaper bags!  Even better, she has a line call Green by DE.  They are made from organic cotton and are simply amazing.  The detail in these bags is beautiful.  Beautifully ined compartments, feet to keep from scuffing up your bag, hidden magnetic closures, adorable matching changing pad and more.

I've been toting this bag around and I just love it.  The strap is comfortable.  The bag so light and completely fashionable.  I love the fabrics and all of the pockets (there are 8!)  They are the perfect size too.  Great for my baby girls toys to look adorable hitching along.

Now it's your chance to win today's items :)  The winner of this day will win a Children's Orchard Gift Card, a copy of Raising Baby Green compliments of Wiley Publishers and an amazing organic diaper bag by Danielle Elizabeth Designs.

Meet the Greenzys

At the start of Earth Week I told you about a great event going on.  There are several blogs involved and today is my day!  I would like to introduce you The Greenzys!

The Greenzys are a brand new line of plush animals with a story to tell (book!)  Each stuffed animal is green, made from soy fibers, non-toxic dyes and bears the green heart shaped planet logo on it's belly.  My son *loves* that :)

Before I go further, please check out this adorable video.

How cute are they!  And how catchy is that tune?!  I for one think that these characters would make an adorable show.  I don't let me kids watch much TV, but when I do, I would appreciate a show like this.  To be clear, I have not heard anything about it being a show, I just think it would be great.

On to the book!  It's a beautiful story about how the way the planet has been abused and the destruction that it has caused.  Okay, so not in so many words, and not quite that dark, but that's the point.  It is a bout a beautiful old tree that is clinging to the last of her seed in hopes of carrying on.  She has been choked out by pollution and reaches out for a helping hand.

In come the Greenzys.  They don't know each other, but when they are united, they soon realize that they can do something to help and they do!  Meet them!  There (left to right - starting on the top) Holly, Violet, Willow, Peat, Yew Yew, Poppy, Mango & Rooty.  We have Peat and love him.  Actually, my son has Peat.  He has taken to Peat and even takes him to bed with him, which is HUGE.  My son's best friend Motta Motta, has been the only one to keep that place, so to share that with Peat is a big deal :)

As part of the book and plush animals, each one comes with a code to hop on their site and plant a tree in parternship with the Arbor Day Foundation!  You can even print out a certificate, if you do, please use the back of an old piece of paper or recycled paper.  What a great way for kids to see how they can make a difference too.

My children love their Greenzys and they would like to share one with you.  You have the chance to meet and love Willow.  Your children will love how snuggly she is (the soy fibers are FAR different than the typical synthetics!)
Willow is an elephant from India and a born leader. She’s always first in line when the Greenzys head off on a mission and cheers them on by blowing her trunk like a trumpet! It’s a tough job, though, leading seven young, inexperienced animals -- especially when you’re a rookie yourself! But, it’s worth the effort to Willow. She treasures her Earth home and wants to take care of it.   Her favorite green activity is collecting rain to water her plants and using her trunk as a waterspout!

Little Green Books

I've talked before about Little Green Books.  Reading to children is such a great thing to do.  They love it, we love it and it's a great chance to bond with your child and teach them valuable lessons.

When I first discovered Little Green Books, I was really happy to have a way to join a love for reading with a love for the Earth.  My son is 5 and is like a little sponge.  He just takes in so much.  He really loves these books and while they still consume resources, knowing that they are made from recycled waste and printed with vegetable inks helps me rest a little easier.

For Earth Day this year I wanted to do my best to reach out to families and children.  As parents we hope that we do a good job and raise our children to be respectful adults.  I think that's where a love for green living comes in for me.  I want my children to appreciate all that is around them and all that they are provided with.  I am happy to have teaching tools specific to their young ages, like these books.

I would like to share a little about these books and thank to Simon & Schuster for giving you the chance to share them with your little one as well.

The Little Green Books line is full of great titles featuring lovable characters and Earth friendly messages.

I Can Save The Ocean
Max the Little Green Monster is an adorable character that finds out that he can take steps at home to help save the ocean and all of the beautiful creatures that live there! Sweet lessons and lovable illustrations for little ones that want to be little green monsters too.

Little Monkey (& Little Panda)
I just adore these books. They are plush (made from recycled Polartec fleece) & cotton.  My 7 month old daughter just loves snuggling and chewing on them. The illustrations are feature large patterned images and she loves looking at the contrasting colors. The stories are short, sweet and feature playful (and energetic) Little Monkey and Little Panda.

This is Our World
An adorable book with built in surprise (puzzles) for your little one.

My son especially enjoyed the puzzle pieces in this book, though I admit he has lost track of them by now.  This book is an Earth Day journey picking up the Earth and everyone coming together to do their part for our planet.

In addition to the Little Green Books series, they have teamed up with Nickelodeon's Big Green Help to bring a whole line of character themed books.  Even though my son is limited in his TV time, he still knows the characters and was thrilled to see these books.  He thought they were very cool, and if I remember anything about being a kid cool = good and good = they'll listen!  (Each book below is linked to Amazon for more information.)

These books are great. They teach about beautifying city lots, planting trees, starting up recycling programs, the dangers of greenhouse gases and more. These books are inspired by some of children's favorite Nickelodeon characters including the Wonder Pets, Spongebob, Dora, Diego and Blue's Clues. These characters get children excited about and involved in learning about greening our Earth. My son was very excited and my daughter especially loved being able to point out the animals.

Thanks to Little Green Books, one of you can win a great Little Green Books starter set!  You'll get all of these great titles that I have had the pleasure of reviewing for you.

Eat right and love your body.

Eating organically is a great way to know what is going into your body. With traditional farming, there are all sorts of chemicals used to keep things out, put things in and who knows what else.

I started browsing the internet for more information (I am a Google addict!). I found a familiar face - Earthbound Farm. I recognized their logo from the produce at my local store and the handy reusable tote that I scored last year as part of their earth day promotion.

This year Earthbound Farm is at it again with the help of Greenman.

Greenman helps Sue through a series of eco-disasters like choosing non-organic produce, harsh chemical cleaners, processed foods, water wast, trashing recyclable items and more.

If you would like to check out the whole lineup you can do that here on their Youtube channel (they're shorts!).

Here's one showing of their newest cook book - The Earthbound Cook

As a way to kick off Earth Week, Earthbound Farm is offering one of you the chance to win some great coupons and a copy of their book Food to Live By.
