Grandma El's: A #FluffyXmas Highlight!

Sometimes, no matter what we do, our little ones get diaper rashes, though using cloth diapers is a big help.  In my experience, it is most often food related, and sometimes figuring out the cause was not so simple!  We once had a somewhat persistent irritation that turned out to be all of the apples our daughter was eating.  Who would have thought?

So what's a parent to do - especially a cloth diapering parent?  We all know that you can't just slap on any rash cream, and if we have to put something on our baby we want it to be safe, effective and, of course, cloth diaper safe - Grandma El's fits the bill!

Grandma El's Diaper Rash Remedy & Prevention does not contain phthalates, parabens, dyes, or any harmful ingredients whatsoever.  It's also hypo-allergenic!  To top it off, a little really goes a long way.  Apply a thin layer of Grandma El's and rub in gently to aid the healing of your baby's irritation.  Grandma El's is a salve like cream (not a thick white cream) with a gentle, natural scent.  In addition to being a great rash cream, Grandma El's is great for use on eczema, heat rash, burns, sun burns, cradle cap and chapped lips or cheeks.

This stuff is super gentle and it works.  It was one of the very first cloth diaper safe rash creams that I ever tried when I first started cloth.  I was so pleased at the results and I am happy to be sharing it now, with you!

Be sure to come back here December 1st for a chance to win your own tube of Grandma El's during the Merry Fluffy Christmas event!

AppleCheeks Diapers! A #FluffyXmas Highlight!

I love cloth diapers and finding a new brand that makes it's way into my heart and permanent stash is no easy task!  I love a good fit, easy to use, appealing design and full functionality.  I have plenty of favorites, so joining those ranks requires a pretty great diaper.  Lucky for me, and you, AppleCheeks diapers fit the bill!

While at the ABC Kids Expo this past September, I was able to get my hands on one of these adorable diapers to try out for myself.  Not only were the AppleCheeks ladies super sweet, but their diapers rock.  I am so in love with their Little Bundle with bamboo insert in the Delicious print (as seen below).  It is so adorable and works great!  I like to be risky and put diapers to the 'real test' right away - overnights that is.  If a diaper doesn't work for me overnight, it's not going to make it's way into my permanent stash, simple as that.

The night came and I laid my bamboo insert inside of the cover.  To accommodate my two year old I used a second insert under the bamboo insert, but I found in the morning that it wasn't need.  The bamboo insert worked beautifully, though each baby is different and some can soak even the thickest diapers, so do what you need for your little one, but know that this cover worked well.  I have use it both as a cover and as a pocket type diaper and I had zero leaking either way.

AppleCheeks diapers come in two sizes - 1 & 2.  Size 1 fits approx. 7 - 18lbs, and Size 2 fits approx. 18 - 35lbs.  We are using size 2 with room to grow on our two year old.

To the right you can see the inside of the AppleCheeks design.  It has a super soft micro-fleece lining, all snaps (love snaps!), an easy to use pocket opening and, of course, a waterproof outer shell.  Due to the positioning and size of their envelope design, you do not need to remove inserts before washing.

You will love this diaper.  If you aren't already a fan, I highly recommend fanning AppleCheeks on facebook!  They are closing in on 10k fans and will be having a huge fan celebration that will include a ton of their retailers (with LOTS of chances to win diapers and other awesome items!)

Be sure to come back here December 1st for a chance to win your very own Little Bundle from AppleCheeks during the Merry Fluffy Christmas event!

Fun DIY Glue Snowman Ornament

Christmas is a ways away, but I'm already trying to find fun gift and craft ideas.  I know, I know - respect the turkey... Sorry!

I saw a melted snowman ornament on Pinterest, but it used several materials and well, it really wasn't my style, so I started thinking how I could adapt it to be easy to to make for kids, and with fewer materials.  I landed on this guy and I love him :)

What you'll need:

School Glue (the white stuff)
Ribbon or String (about 3-4 inches)
Wax Paper
Imagination

This fun showman is easy to make, and a great craft for kids.  It uses hardly any glue, so a whole bottle should make plenty of snowmen to help decorate your tree!

Using string or ribbon, make a small loop to use as a hanger.  (If you don't want to see it in the glue once dried, you could skip this part and add it later by poking a hole in your snowman.)

Get out a piece of wax paper and your glue.  Lay down your hanger and then use the glue to create the snowman shape (or other fun shape of your choice!)  Be sure to fill your shape in fully with glue.  Let it dry overnight, or until the glue has turned clear.

If you'd like for your snowman to have arms, you could lay tiny sticks in the glue!

Once it's fully dried you can carefully peel it up off of the wax paper, it should come up easily.

The next step is to get out your markers and have fun.  Make eyes, a carrot nose and button mouth.  Add fun snowman type decorations like a scarf, vest or whatever your child thinks up.

EcoSprout Detergent: A #FluffyXmas Highlight!

#FluffyXmas?  Oh yes!  If you haven't heard yet, there is a huge Merry Fluffy Christmas blogging event that will be kicking off December 1st.  There are more than 40 blogs participating, and at each one you will have the chance to enter for some amazing fluff packages.  Over the next couple of weeks, I'm going to be telling you about my sponsors in these #FluffyXmas Highlights!  You'll learn about some great products, and then have a chance to come back during the event to win my Merry Fluffy Christmas package.

Today I am introducing you to Eco Sprout's 100% natural & biodegradable cloth diaper detergent.  It is also is free from dyes, brighteners, enzymes, phosphates and is SLS free.

I have to admit that when they contacted me about a review, I was way more than skeptical.  I've used a lot of detergents and more times than not we end up with a rash, ammonia burn, stinky diapers or repelling (back when I used microfiber).  I am always nervous when I try out a new detergent, and this time was no different... until I used my first overnight diaper!

G's diapers had been in need of a good washing, as she is older now and ammonia seems to sneak up on us from time to time due to random foods she eats.  Every few washes or so I tend to add an extra hot wash or rinse, which does the trick, but Eco Sprout kicked it out all on it's own, no extras!  I put a very thick overnight diaper on her that night and when she woke in the morning, there was not a scent to be found, and her diaper was FULL of pee.  I'm talking this girl had to go!  I'm such a skeptic, I never really expect to love a detergent, but I was amazed by Eco Sprout.  I can tell you in no uncertain terms, that this rarely happens.

Washing was simple.  I followed my regular routine, cold wash with or without detergent, depending on if they are really dirty or not and then my hot wash with detergent.  With Eco Sprout I use 2-3 scoops in my top loading machine, sometimes I'll use a scoop or two in the cold wash if I've gone too long between washes.  I have been using Eco Sprout now for a couple of months and it has worked well and predictably.  I would recommend it to anyone.

As with any detergent, especially if you are having diaper issues, you're going to want to do a good heavy wash the first time to get rid of the issues caused by your previous detergent.  Eco Sprout includes instructions with this in mind, as well as easy to follow standard wash instructions.  I have found this detergent to be very easy to use, no fussing and worrying over using enough or too much.  I've had others where a flat scoop vs a rounded scoop would make a difference, so this is a welcome change.

Eco Sprout runs $24.98 for 192 HE loads, and there are other sizes available as well.  The detergent comes in unscented and scented varieties (Not sure which to get? Get a sampler!).  The scents are gentle and pleasant, and won't scent your diapers (you really don't want leftovers!)  While you're browsing, be sure to check out their Pail Freshener, Bottom Balm & Bottom Spray.  I haven't had the chance to try them, but if they are have as well thought out as the detergent, I'm sure they'll be great!

I hope you try Eco Sprout's detergent, I am loving it and I'm sure you will too!

Be sure to come back December 1st for your chance to win a 24oz bag of Eco Sprout Detergent during the Merry Fluffy Christmas event!

If you have any questions, please post them below and I will be sure to answer them.

We're A Bunch Of Co-Sleepers

In light of the controversial campaign by the Milwaukee Health Department (as seen to the right), I would like to share my thoughts and experiences with co-sleeping, or more specifically in my case,  bedsharing.  If you'd like to read a bit more about the facts of co-sleeping, please visit this article at Kaia Magazine.

I suppose I should mention first that I am a breastfeeding mom (this comes into play in a moment).  I was 22 when I had my first baby and the idea was really not one I was comfortable with.  I wasn't yet comfortable with my body, but once E was born and I looked into those eyes...  Well, let's just say that I was his.  He had a hard time latching and I was inexperienced - we would spend more than a month pumping, crying (both of us!), nursing and everything in-between.  I started like any new mom with a crib and bassinet to keep him close, but I soon found myself with my sweet baby in bed with me.  It was partially out of ease, but there was more.  It felt right and he did better - he nursed better, he slept better and he was far happier in general.  I was able to sleep better as a result too.  I slept lighter, but I slept.

Fast forward 3 years and our first daughter is born 7 1/2 weeks premature.  She was amazing and so strong, but still so small.  We brought her home at just two weeks old, but still quite early and small.  My husband was scared of her sleeping with us, and really who could blame him?  We bought one of those movement monitors to keep an eye on her breathing, but a week later she would too find her way into our bed, sleeping peacefully.  L would go on to spend about 15 months in our bed before moving to her own, though that would change after we brought G home from the hospital.

G came right home and into our bed.  Twenty-six months later, she's still there!  I would complain, but she's amazing.  She sleeps like an angel and I can't think of anything better to wake up to than her cheerful face, snuggles or "I love you"s.
When babies take over!
Notice the bed on the floor for L (where she began to sleep after G was born) & the crib to the right - our first failed attempt to get G out of our bed.  Have no fear, I moved and/or arranged everyone properly before I went to bed.

I want to say first and foremost that co-sleeping (bedsharing) is not for everyone.  I do think that most people would be surprised by how aware of their child they become, but infants aren't experiments and this is an area that requires deliberate action and some confidence.  I do believe that co-sleeping is a good thing and I know that there are proven physiological benefits.  I highly recommend reading up on Kangaroo Care for some amazing insight into the physiological benefits of close contact. While they aren't exactly the same, the physiological benefits do mirror one another.  It's really quite amazing the way that our bodies work with others, especially our infants.  In addition, co-sleeping helps families bond.  There is a closeness there that is simply amazing, for my husband too!  He works all day and I'm here with the kids, but each night he gets to snuggle up to his baby girl.

So here's the deal - Safety is key.  Just as there are precautions to take with crib sleeping (no bumpers, pillow, toys, etc), there are precautions with co-sleeping.  Pillows do not go near babies, there should be no gaps for baby to fall ino/get stuck in and light blankets are a must, in fact I sleep with only a sheet.  My husband uses a light cotton blanket, like the one seen here.  I even used a breathable bed rail for quite some time as extra security, just like you would use for a child transitioning to a big bed.  There are even devices to help provide baby with their own space, while co-sleeping.  The Arm's Reach Co-Sleeper is one great solution.

While co-sleeping is not for everyone, I feel that scare tactics, like those used by the Milwaukee Health Department, are harmful by not providing full and accurate information.  Whether people choose to co-sleep or not, they should be informed in order to help empower them to make the right decision for their family.

What are you thoughts on this campaign, or on co-sleeping?  I'd love to hear them!

Who benefits from this?

I was upset by a newsletter sent home by my son's school principal last week.  The first thing I read was that our school was able to profit approximately $10,000.00 by selling cookie dough.  My first thought was WOW, that's a lot of cookie dough. My second thought was WOW, what message are we sending to our kids?

We are in a rural area with a small population, so our elementary school only has around 800 students K-8, to put into perspective the volume sold.  I fully understand the need for fundraisers, but I question this method.  With convenience foods everywhere and our nation facing a serious health crisis as a result, I have serious reservations about "cookie dough" as a method for school fundraising.  What happened to fruit sales?  Future Farmers of America continues to do citrus sales year after year - proof that healthy foods have a place in this market.  Why not choose something that benefits the school and sends a good message that supports healthy living?

Maybe I'm being sensitive, but I feel that elementary school is a place where we should be leading by example and promoting healthy living in all areas.  When our schools have contracts with soda companies, fast food restaurants and fundraise by selling an unhealthy lifestyle, I can't stand by and say nothing.

Who benefits from this?

Does your school offer a wholesome solution?  I would love to hear it, along with your thoughts on the subject!

Joe-Pa No More: A Mom's Point of View

I woke up this morning to my children talking and laughing and my husband getting ready for work. I came to join them in the kitchen as I always do and my husband delivered the news that Joe Paterno, head coach of the Penn State Nittany Lions football program had been fired. My gut reaction was "good for them", but my mind kept going.

If you are unfamiliar with this story, here's a brief background.  This is sensitive subject matter.

Earlier this week it broke that former defensive coordinator for the Nittany Lions, Jerry Sandusky, had been charged with sexually assaulting eight boys over a fifteen year period, including on the grounds of the Penn State program, at least twice. One such incident was witnessed by a graduate assistant coach in 2002 who told Joe Paterno, the head coach.  Paterno, in turn, directed this information to the athletic director, which made it's way to a school vice president who looked over campus police.  There was at least one incident prior to this in 1998, in which Sandusky evidently promised not to do it again.  This time, Sandusky's keys to the locker room were taken away.

WHAT?!!!!!!!! and let's just say that my language on this is not family friendly.

How can adults, especially in positions of power, see this and know what's going on and not say a word?  How do they live with themselves?  And Joe??  He has the audacity to be upset that he's being fired?  Oh yes, he 'graciously' said that he would resign at the end of the season. How benevolent of him.  Screw that!  I'm a football fan (Go Buckeyes!) and I love to see our Big 10 brothers do well, but holy freaking cow, who the hell does this?

Part of me hates to see a man, who so many admire, go down like this, but my heart does not ache for the man - make no mistake!  My heart hurts for all of the trust and admiration that has been shattered.  People looked to him for standards of what it means to be moral, wholesome and someone to aspire to be.  Paterno has long been considered a father figure of sorts in this program, but no more.  People are angry, some at him, some defending him.  I think that's nuts to defend him, but I can understand the emotional struggle that it is to accept the gravity of what has happened, but these people are only a small piece of this.

The heart of the matter is the boys - all of those lives changed forever.  My heart just breaks for these boys and now men who were violated not just physically, but emotionally and in any other possible way. Sandusky worked with children and held a position of great importance with a state football team that is loved and admired by so many.  To abuse that is inexcusable and unconscionable.  These boys were let down and dismissed every step of the way.  Thankfully this has now come into the light and something is finally being done - though only a small token this late in the game.

Thank you for being with me here and allowing me to share this heaviness on my heart.  It's a deviation from what I typically write about, but this case shows the importance of standing up and doing the right thing.  It's not always easy, but it is always the right thing to do, no matter the magnitude of the injustice.

I have this place to share my thoughts and feelings, I invite you to share yours as well.

What's on your refrigerator?

Inspired by Kim over at Dirty Diaper Laundry, I want to share with you... *drumroll please* my refrigerator.  Why?  Well because we all have one and as she says, it's a fun way to get to know someone.  So here is mine!  It is covered with love, memories and probably a few things that should be washed off.  I encourage you to browse, laugh at my expense and then share the contents of your refrigerator door as well.
Above you see:
1.  A photo of our son at Kindergarten last year with his grandmother.
2.  My husband being covered with "spiderwebs" by our very own super Spider-man.
3.  Our Christmas photo from last year.  It's really our only family photo in the last year, so there it is!
4. To the right you will see some adorable magnets, though they are hard to make out they are the new prints from Beco Baby Carrier, and a souvenir from the ABC Kids Expo.
5. A 911 magnet that our son brought home from school a couple of weeks ago.
6. And our compost list, complete with stickers from going to vote (two from yesterday!)

Due to our children putting their hands on everything in sight, the top of our fridge also loves collectibles - despite my best efforts.  The bottom half is completely clear though... that counts for something right?

On the top you'll find, my purse, a jar full of pencils, markers and scissors, a wedding photo, a gift card from my birthday that I still need to use, a receipt, a Scentsy that needs new wax and an adorable Sophie keychain - also a souvenir from ABC Kids.

What you can't see up there is a phone book (I need to opt out of these!), yard stick, pastels (E uses them for his homework), a baby book, glue, my Kindle, DIY Kindle case and I'm sure some additional miscellaneous items that we tossed up there to keep away from the kids.
The sides of my refrigerator contain a rather comical letter to my husband from my sister-in-law, various family photos (eight, including our Christmas photo from 2 years ago) and a random shirt magnet that belongs to a dress up paper doll type toy.

So let's hear it, or see it if you're feeling spunky!  What's on your fridge?

My thoughts on The Greater Good

***By popular demand, this is going to be available until Wednesday November 9th to view for free***

I spoke to you earlier in the week about The Greater Good, a documentary about vaccines.  I want to take a moment now to share some of my impressions from the film.

What I saw from the film was a clear position that it is all about vaccine safety.  I think that any person and/or parent can appreciate that.  It's a position that I feel accurately represents me and my thoughts, feeling, fears and hopes regarding vaccines.

I am not anti-vaccinations.  I am however pro-quality and safe ingredients.  Just as I am in any and all areas of my family's life.  I care about the cleaners I use on our home's surfaces, the bath products used on our skin and the foods that go into our mouths.  It is very natural for me to have concern and scrutiny over items that will be literally injected into our bodies.  I want to know that they are safe for my children in that aspect.

I am wanting to say something here regarding the history and long length of use of vaccines and how that equates to safety, but I'm coming up short.  Just because something has been around for a long time doesn't make it safe.  I have seen that in many of the products that I fled from in my journey to a healthier life.  Many people have been vaccinated over the years, most have no ill effects, and then there are those who do.  We are living in a generation of people that have many concerns over potential effects.

My thoughts on the following portion were really inspired by this quote from Dr. Paul Offit, MD - Chief, Division of Infectious Diseases - The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia.  He was speaking of the Gardasil vaccine, which after just 15 months, of a planned 4 year trial, was approved for fast tracking by the FDA.  It was approved for use within six months and the trial was brought to a halt as a result.

"That you got a vaccine and that then you developed symptoms doesn't necessarily mean that the vaccine caused the symptoms.  There is no evidence that HPV vaccine causes any of the serious side effects that it has been alleged to cause.  It's a beautiful vaccine, it's safe, effective.  It doesn't matter what people say.  It really doesn't matter what people's opinions are.  All you have to do is look at the data, and the data, I think, will tell you how one should approach a problem."

To that I say, TEST THEM!  Give us real, complete data!  Test the ingredients, one by one, in thorough trials, in doses that mimic those of the vaccine schedule, by themselves against true placebos - saline.  Then test the vaccines against true placebos*.  Without controlled studies, claims of side effects can be easily dismissed, whether related to the vaccines or not.  I think we need to document these reactions and know if there is a link or not.

*If you missed it in the movie, many vaccines are tested against placebos that are the aluminum, mercury or even a different vaccine.  Per this study that can be found at annals.org (view the full study with a paid subscription).

When we are talking about injecting chemicals into hundreds of thousands of bodies, numerous times, we need to be confident in their safety.  If they are safe, great!  We can eliminate that possible cause for the questions and concerns we have and begin to look elsewhere.  If not, we can work to improve them and make them safe.  Win - win - win.... WIN!

Don't miss your chance to see this great movie for free!  The Greater Good is available to watch, for free through the end of today at Mercola.com  In addition to being available online, you can support the film by purchasing your very own copy for just $10, information also at the link above.  I can't wait to get my copy!

When you're done, come back here and let me know your thoughts.  Thank you for watching with me!
