Swaddle Your Baby

One of the best things about having a little baby is wrapping them up in a blanket and just holding them and staring at them.

I don't know about most babies, but I know that my daughter is not too fond of getting too warm. It is surprisingly easily done too. A sleeper and blanket can often get her wiggly and upset.

I was recently given the opportunity to try out a Sheer Organic Swaddle Wrap from Solana. One of my biggest gripes about organic stuff, though I love it, is that much of it is cream and neutrals. I want color and Solana has delivered. Look at these beautiful colors. They also have hats, burp cloths and washcloths that match their blankets :)

I have several blankets for my girls, but none are like this. These wraps are soft and huge! They are an oversized 45"x45", which makes them incredibly easy to use for swaddling. Instead of playing around and having to be sure that I have enough fabric here or there, I just can just wrap her up and go.

I read on their site that this was soothing. I can recall doing this when my babies were newborns, but quickly losing interest. Perhaps because my blankets weren't appropriate for it. When I got this blanket, I wrapped up my baby girl in it and, I kid you not, she slept the best that she had ever slept when being put down to rest while we had dinner that night. It was amazing.

I have used this blanket a lot for her. I think my favorite thing is how light, but sufficient, it is. I can have her dressed as I usually would, and wrapping her up doesn't get her overheated and upset. She loves to be wrapped up too, so this has truly been very helpful in keeping her comfortable.

I would suggest this to anyone :) I love that it is organic, and I love that it is handmade in the USA.

Speaking of everyone needing one of these! Solana has generously set up a discount code for you!

Use code: ecofamily for 15% off of your entire order through the end of January!

Enjoy!

Get your children into Green!

We choose to try to live as green of a lifestyle as we can. We have three children. Our oldest will start school next year and he is beginning to notice all of the things that we do around here.

He enjoys helping putting "trash" into the proper bins and likes to ask me what items is made out of, to properly sort them.

You should have heard him about a year ago talking about high fructose corn syrup! It was too funny.

Sometimes it can be hard to explain things to a child so that they understand it. That's where Little Green Books come in!

Not only do Little Green Books help explain green choices to kids, they make it fun.

Little Green Books was kind enough to send me some of their books to look over, share with my children and review. They offer such a nice assortment of titles, lessons and entertainment.

They have adorable story lines, fun flap books and plush baby friendly books, all that send an easy to understand green message to children.

Check out a few of their titles.

You can keep that trash and reuse it in all kinds of wonderful ways!
Do you see that old jar?
Don't throw that away!
You can turn it into...a new vase!

Follow an eco-conscious super hero as he teaches kids how to recycle and reuse common household items! The five large flaps throughout show that oridinary trash is really a treasure. From turning old clothes into fun costumes or an old box into a brand new car, kids will learn that saving the environment is super cool!

Peek into this diary of an aluminum can as it goes on a journey from inside a bauxite rock under the beaches of Jamaica, to the manufacturing line, to the store shelf, to a garbage can, and finally to a recycling plant where it emerges into its new life...as a baseball bat!

Everyone's talking about the environment these days, especially kids. But what can kids do? A lot! This book is filled with cool coloring pages, Earth-saving tips, fun facts, and easy activities kids can do to help the environment. It's just what kids need to be green all by themselves!

Not only do Little Green Books teach about being green, they are green! Their books are made from recycled materials and printed with vegetable or soy inks! How cool is that!

And as if the books weren't cute enough, they also have games on their website. You can recycle, play a fun game of I spy and learn about a garden.

My son loves the recycling game!

I love these books, my children love these books and I'm sure you'll love them too! Little Green Books is giving TEN! of you the chance to win a set of their books!

Each of the winners will receive Don't Throw that Away! and Santa Clause is Green!

I love a good deal!

Deal a day sites aren't all that new. I've seen several pop up and they may or may not have a theme. Typically they are nothing more than a deal a day site. Nothing to relate to and are of no importance beyond maybe getting a good deal.

I recently came upon a site called EcoBabyBuys. At first I thought it was like any other site, and then I started browsing. Looking at their FAQ, About Us and Blog. I soon realized that these were mothers that wanted the best for their children and wanted to help others do the same and save at the same time. Their mission was to discover manufacturers that offered non-toxic, eco-friendly and fairly traded products for babies and children.

I have been watching their site for a little while now and am continually impressed by the uniqueness of the items. They aren't the same items that I see everywhere else and I love that. I have seen some popular items and that's fun too. The variety is fantastic.

I've noticed that many of the items they have sold fit very well into imaginative and creative play. That is *so* huge for me with my kids. I was lucky enough to receive a package from them and their items are of great quality. You can tell that they put thought into what they find and bring to their deals. As a mother and consumer, I appreciate that.

I would also like to mention that it is also another of their goals is to help alleviate any additional stress that comes with being a busy parent and trying to find safe toys. Not everyone has the time to address the safety record of a manufacturer or knows where to start to look.

They take pride in researching their vendors to meet the following strict criteria so that they may provide the best and safest possible products on the market to their customers:

*the use of non-toxic materials and dyes
*the use of organic and/or recycled textiles and materials
*the use of eco-friendly packaging
*and a commitment and adherence to the standards of fair-trade

That's not something you see in typical deal a day eco-friendly sites and that's a big part of why I wanted to share this with you.

I've had the pleasure of speaking with Stacey of EcoBabyBuys and they have generously offered our readers a chance to win a $50 gift certificate to EcoBabyBuys!

That is more than enough to snag one (or some) of their, at least, 40% off of retail items!

Pretty Nails

My daughter will be two in March. She is *so* girly. It is adorable. She loves to do what Mommy does. She loves her shoes, her bows and her clothes.

It came as no surprise to me when, a few weeks ago, she wanted me to paint her nails when I did mine.

I didn't think for a moment that she would sit still and let me do them, but she did :) And when we had finished with her fingers, she wanted me to do her toes :) So we did.

The next day, she had rubbed most of the polish off and I quickly realized that I had no way to remove the rest. Yes, I have remover. However, I didn't want to use harsh polish remover on my baby who likes to put everything in her mouth. I do mean everything.

So, there the polish stayed.

I got to looking around the internet and came upon Piggy Paint. Great! Natural paints I thought :) I didn't expect them to be what I was use to (color selection), but I thought I'd take a look.

The colors were way better than I could have expected! They are pretty and shimmery! Check out these colors! How amazing that I can get not only beautiful colors to use on my little girl, but that they are safe for her too. According to their site, Piggy Paints are *Low Odor, *Non-toxic, *Water-based formula & *Hypoallergenic. They are completely free of formaldehyde, toluene, phthalates, BPA, Ethyl and acetone.

They also offer a no acetone, low odor polish remover made from natural ingredients. (This is so huge for me!)

Check out this comparison done between traditional polishes and Piggy Paint.
After seeing this comparison, I knew that I needed something else to use on my little girl. No way could I knowingly use traditional paints on her. And for that matter, me!

I contacted Piggy Paint and they kindly sent me a polish and remover to try. My daughter was thrilled when it arrived.

I followed the directions that came with the polish. I washed her hands, painted her nails and then used a blow dryer (on warm) to set the polish. That part is optional, but I did it to help dry it faster.

Here is my baby girl showing off her Piggy Paints :)

I'd also like to mention that after dinner that night, my daughter decided to chomp at her food *with* her fingers in her mouth. I was very happy to know that her polish was safe!

I love these paints and can't wait to order some more colors (for me too!).

As a special bonus Piggy Paint is offering one lucky reader a $15 gift code and a discount to our readers!

Lunch Time :)

I want to talk for a moment about packing lunches :)

If you have kids in school (or even if you don't) you may have seen on the news the problems with nutritional lunches in schools. Here's an article that touches on school lunch content by My Optimum Health.

The only way to truly know what your child is eating is to pack a lunch (Check out this other article by My Optimum Health for some great tips and guidelines.)

For me, packing a lunch seems like a good idea and doable. The question for me then turns to what do I pack my child's lunch in. Thankfully I have until next August to figure this out for sure :)

I do know that using an endless assortment of plastic baggies isn't an option. Foil isn't either. So what am I to do?

I came across this product by Kids Konserve.

Pictured above is their Waste-Free Lunch Kit. It sells for $40. It includes everything you would need to pack a lunch; a recycled cotton sack, cloth napkin, stainless steel beverage bottle, food kozy and two stainless steel food containers.

I have not used this product, but I love the idea of it. I love that it seems simple, straight forward and easy to use. Also, when ordering from their site, you can easily add more items from the same ordering page (extra containers, lids, etc.)

For a more economical version, there is this. The Snak Pak.
This looks like it would be perfect for getting started, a younger child, or someone who has already purchased a reusable water bottle. It sells for $22 and comes with a cotton draw string bag, cloth napkin, food kozy, stainless steel food container and recycled aluminum name tag.

One other thing that I would like to mention on their site, that I just adore, is this reusable Party Pak. It would be *perfect* for every teacher to have one (or more) of these. If I were a teacher, I could totally see loving this, putting all of the dirties into a bag and running my dishwasher when I got home. No fuss, and no waste. (Thought I do wish that it came with napkins).

Come to think of it, this would be great for any parent that has birthday parties/holidays/etc. at their home. Great for the kids to eat off of :)This is BPA, Lead & Phthalate Free and made from 100% recycled plastic yogurt containers! The kit sells for $55 (there is a smaller 12 serving version) and contains 25 each: 7" plates, 16 oz. tumblers, and forks, knives & spoons. All in 3 cotton drawstring bags.

So, I wrote Kids Konserve and they were super sweet in providing a discount code for our readers :)

Go to Kids Konserve
shop around
and use code: ecofamily for 15% off of your purchase!
code expires 12/31/09

I would like to mention that when I get a chance to try out one of these, I will update! I love the look of this product and I think kids would love it. (My son says it's cool.) :D

What's in your baby's food?

We hope that we know what's in our baby's food when we buy it. But there can be a simpler and much more cost effective choice.

Make your baby's food!

Making your baby's food gives you the option of to chose exactly what you want your baby to eat. Organic and/or local if you choose, the exact ingredients, no additives, etc.

In addition to knowing exactly what's in your baby's food. Consider the cost. From my experience jars of organic baby food run anywhere from $.50 to $1.00 (or more depending on content). If the average baby eats 6 jars a day, you've got $3-$6/day, just in jarred baby food.

That's not including snacks, drinks, etc. That's $90-180 a month in jarred baby food alone. That might not seem like a huge amount, but when you consider this is in addition to your food budget and considering the small amount of food this actually is (not to mention the special baby snacks, drinks, etc.), that seems high to me.

Now let's talk about waste :| If your baby eats 6 jars a day that's 180 jars in a month. 180 jars that may or may not be recycled (let's hope they are!). If your baby is only on jarred food for 6 months total, that's 1080 jars (and $540-1080).

If you make your baby's food you can make several jars from a relatively tiny amount of food. I think one sweet potato made something like 4 small jars of food when I did it for my daughter. You can also use portions of foods that you bought for your meals (I found this super easy as my babies grew).

For super easy baby food making, the Beaba Babycook (BPA free) looks like a winner. I've not tried it, but it looks amazing.
According to it's description it is a "one-of-a-kind, compact appliance that steams, purees, defrosts and re-heats the freshest, healthiest food for your baby. It enables parents to provide the best ingredients for their baby's food at a fraction of the cost of jarred foods! Not only does preparing baby's food save families money, it also drastically cuts down on packaging and waste."

In addition, one great resource for how to make your own baby food is Wholesome Baby Food.com

This site offers answers to so many questions, recipes, how-tos and so much more. They also have this handy Quick Start Guide.

To make getting started a little easier Bebeology and The Eco-Friendly Family blog are once again teaming up for a giveaway :D

Nicole is generously donating a Beaba Multi-Portion Freezer Tray and a Fresh Baby Cookbook to get one lucky reader started :D

Bye Bye Plastic Bags!

So, I think we all know that it's best to use reusable bags.

Did you know that there are an estimated 500 billion bags used worldwide each year?

There are all sorts of bags out there. Compact bags, big bags, freezer bags, simple bags, fancy bags..... I think you get the idea :D

I personally use an army of grocery store bags that I picked up for $1 a piece. They hold a lot and have a solid bottom. The solid bottom is the reason I love these for groceries.

For all of my other shopping, I tend to bring along my prettier bags. I've gotten these from Kohl's, Target, Kmart (in their handbag section they have some cute totes!), online, etc. etc. Basically any cute/fun bag can be used :)

Did you know that the average family uses 60 plastic bags in just 4 trips to the grocery store?

I've known for some time that I wanted to write about this, so I went searching! I found the most fantastic bags. They are so fashionable, sturdy and built on great principle.

These bags are by Elbow Grease Designs and I am in love with this bag. It is so sturdy, but that's not even the beginning.
I got a knock at my door (thanks mail carrier!) and saw this package on my porch. It was a handmade (elbow grease!) mailer! I opened it up and there were the bags! Oh, so pretty! So excited!

Then I get to looking. The bag is sealed with what appear to be leftover labels, the tag is stamped on a piece of an old Crunch 'n Munch box and the invoice is printed on the back of an old letterhead. I "love" it! Oh and have I mentioned that these bags are made from old banners??!!! Honest to goodness, not one thing that arrived to my door was not repurposed. It was amazing.

Did you know that reusable bags hold substantially more than plastic bags?
The ones I use are of a typical size and hold 3-4 times more!

I have been using reusable bags for a while now and every time I went to the grocery store, I cringed at using plastic produce bags. I didn't when possible, but it wasn't always an option. So, I got stuck with them.

I did some asking around and came across these fantastic (and highly recommended) produce bags by AMK Designs.
I love these bags! They are sturdy, the hold a ton and they don't weigh a thing. I got compliments by the cashier and manager (she was helping my newbie cashier) my very first time using them!

They are so easy to use too. Toss in your fruit/veggies, pull the string and go. You can even wash your produce right in the bags and store them too.

Also, unlike other bags on the market, these come in adorable (you pick the design!) storage pouches that can clip right onto your bag!

So how would you like to win an Elbow Grease Designs grocery bag and a set of AMK Designs produce bags???
Oh and that's not all! If you make a purchase at AMK Designs and put "Amanda sent me" in the notes to the seller, she'll toss in some extra goodies!!!

----Update! We have a winner!----

Need to tote your cloth diapers?

Let's talk diaper bags :)

I was recently introduced to a bag I had never seen before. It is from Maxwell Designs, created by a Canadian stay-at-home mom.

I have not seen this bag in person and do not own it. I can tell you what I have seen and know of it though :)

These bags are hemp and messenger style, so no "looking like mom". Not that being a mom isn't great, but really, I don't want my diaper bag to scream "LOOK I'M A FRUMPY MOM!" Even though most days I feel like it :D I want to look put together even when I don't feel like it (and am probably sporting spit up on my shirt), so I can imagine that this bag would help with that :)

The great and unique things about these bags is that they can be completely custom!

You can pick size: They come in:
Small Diaper Bag Dimensions: 12" long x 9" wide x 4" deep
Medium Diaper Bag Dimensions: 14" long x 3.5" wide x 10.5" deep
Large Diaper Bag Dimensions: 15" long x 5" wide x 10.5" deep

Hemp color: Blue, Taupe, Black or Natural

And cotton accent fabric: Check out these fabric choices!
Here are a few just for something pretty to look at :)

Here's the inside of this diaper bag :) See the pretty trim and outside pockets?

I almost forgot to mention you can get a changing pad to match! There are a couple of cloth diapers in the other pocket, the place for the water bottle will fit a Sigg or Kleen Kanteen style/size container. Judging on the sizes of these things, I'm going to venture to say that this bag is pretty roomy and would have enough space to hold your diapers, extra clothes, a light blanket maybe and some room to spare.
Not in the market for a diaper bag?
They also have changing pads, slings, some baby clothes and I saw some cute purses in the sale section... *want*...

Maxwell Designs is offering a discount for our readers :)
Use code: teff10 to receive 10% off of your total purchase.
This coupon is valid through March of 2010!

Free shipping for orders US over $160: Use code: usashipover160 at checkout

How do you recycle?

Let's start with where. If you don't have curbside recycling, you might think you can't recycle, that it is just too hard, or that your house just won't make much of an impact.

Start by clicking the image to the right. It will take you to Earth 911

All you need to do is type in your zip code, or the zip code of a town you frequent (go to town for work?)

Click on what you want to recycle (plastics are an easy option) and find the nearest recycling center. Click on the name and it should tell you what all they accept. If the first one you try doesn't take all of the things you need it to, try another.

Our closest drop off only accepts a few things, so we take it a town over where they will take everything imaginable.

Recycling is not hard!

We have a single family home, so we have room here. Not a ton, but we do have room. For us, it is convenient to set up a trash can and a few buckets to sort our recycling in.

We have a trash can for plastics (sadly, so many things come in plastic, despite our efforts to reduce it's use).
And a bucket (for each) for soda cans, newspapers, magazines, food cans and glass. That might sound like a lot, but it takes up maybe a 3x3 square in our basement. It's not much and sorting is important.

About one every other month, my husband loads up the car and totes it down to the recycling drop off. That's it! It's easy, no hassle!

What about impact?

HAHA! It's insane! When we started recycling, I thought that it would make a difference, but I had NO idea how much of a difference.

We use to set out at *least* one full can of trash every week. Depending on what went on, it could be two. I'm ashamed to admit this, but it is true.

We started recycling and I kid you not, we *might*, at the most, go through two cans in a MONTH. Honestly, we don't even need to set out a can each week. Most weeks, we have about the equivalent of a grocery bag or two full of trash.

It still amazes me.

So, tell me! How do you recycle? Sort? Etc?

If you are up to it, please leave a comment with your tips, how-tos and/or what works for you. It might help someone else make the transition a little easier or improve the convenience of what they are already doing :)

Have I mentioned that I love babywearing?

I was recently given the amazing opportunity to try out a new (to me) style of carrier. I have owned a wrap since my daughter was born and I do love it, but she's a lot bigger now and quite frankly, my husband just won't wear it. But he does like to wear the girls, so I went on the hunt for something that would work for him and be good for them.

I had heard of the ERGObaby carriers and the style looked perfect. No straps to tie, it looked like it would comfortably support a baby and be easy on the back, and most importantly (so I thought), was that my husband would wear it.

I contacted them and they were amazing in providing me an Organic ERGObaby carrier and infant insert

I anxiously waited... 1) Because I had never seen one, worn one, etc. and I couldn't wait to see how it worked and be able to tell you about it 2) Because I was dying to see what one came (the have some beautiful carriers!) and 3) Because I could not wait for my husband to use it!

So it came and much to my surprise and pleasure, it was the exact model that I would have chosen! The packaging was great too, all boxes, no plastic wraps!

Isn't it beautiful?! This is their Organic Cranberry Nautilus and Blush Beige Organic infant insert

I also want to show another style. This one is not organic, but is adorable and it seems to be very popular :) (They do have an organic infant insert in silver that matches this.)

The carrier features a amazing ergonomic design. It is 100% organic cotton twill (this thing is sturdy!). It has a 100% organic cotton batting and 100% organic cotton sateen lining and hood. I *love* the hood by the way! Great for sunny days, windy days, sleeping baby, going to stores (keeping people away!), etc.

The shoulder straps on these are nice and thick and *very* easy on the shoulders and back. The same goes for the waist belt. It is very comfortable and supportive.

These carriers are also durability &strength tested up to 90 pounds. That is incredible!

The buckles on these are *fantastic*. Not only does it buckle (instead of tie, which I find hugely convenient, and my husband doesn't deem 'girly'), but the straps have elastic on the ends to secure it (folded up) so that you don't have straps dangling all over and looking messy.

Let me talk about the insert a bit :)

I have played around with this a little and have used just a blanket, nothing at all and the insert. The insert is so nice. It snuggles her down in and she just sleeps, no slouching. Which, for such a little baby (she's almost 3 months now and 13 lbs) is important. It also has a pillowy cushion in bottom of it to give the baby soft support and help with positioning and keeping pressure off of the baby's spine, hips and sacrum (read more about this here, it's important to know!). My daughter seemed to love it btw :D So cozy!

Here I am (2nd from the left) wearing the ERGO with infant insert for my first outting with it :) As you may or may not know, this blog is the result of the Eco-Friendly Family board on theBump.com (so many questions and wanted a place to put tips, answers, etc!)

Anyhow, I am in Ohio and the ladies of Ohio and surrounding, wanted to do a get together. We met up at the beautiful home of one of our regular board members and I was all to happy to have the ERGO with me. Soon after arriving, she was fussy, wanting to sleep after eating, and just sitting around wasn't doing the trick. I pulled out the ERGO and she was soon asleep and I was hands free to eat and move about :)

After leaving, the lady I drove up with and I went shopping at a nearby outlet mall. The place was packed (and huge - so much walking). I am also a bit of a germaphobe (not extreme, but very careful... it started with my oldest daughter's premature birth). Anyhow, I put the hood up for protection, she slept and we shopped! It was fantastic and *so easy*.

So, I mentioned that I looked into this carrier, a lot, for my husband. I didn't expect to love it so much! He has used it when we've gone shopping, and it is so cute! I haven't been able to sneak a picture yet, but when I do, it is so up!

I have worn both my my 3 month old and 21 month old in this. My baby girl loves it and sleeps like an angel. My older daughter comes to me asking to be put in it! She loves it and I love that I can comfortably wear her and give her the Mommy time that she needs and that we both want :)

I even popped my son (almost 5) in it just to see. Before I said anything, he blurts out "Oh this is so comfy!" So, yea, even though I knew it, but my younger two can't tell me, I now know *for sure* that it is indeed comfortable :)

I feel like I'm rambling on here, and I may be, but there is just so much to say about this carrier. I am really loving it. I can't begin to tell you how convenient this carrier is. I have my straps set where I like them and I just pop it on. I have 3 kids, and being able to wear one while tending to the others is great, and because it is so easy off and on, it just makes a world of difference.

Oh! That reminds me of another huge HUGE plus! I don't get hot wearing it! I am often busy around here and wearing your baby can get you a little warm, not so much from the carriers, but from them being so close to you and all of that. I don't get hot in the ERGO. I *love* that about it. I have found that I use it all of the time and I grab for it because it works and it's easy.

A few notes here and then I'll let you go, I promise :D

I love my ERGObaby carrier and my daughter loves her baby dolls. She has been spotted around the house putting her babies in her shirt to carry them like mommy does. I was thrilled to see that ERGO also makes a doll carrier, so guess who's getting one for Christmas :D

I got this one, it will go nicely with Mommy's :) I'll get picks up of L wearing it after Christmas when she has hers :) I took a sneak peak at it and can tell you that I was *amazed* by the quality of this toy! The fabric is a very sturdy canvas. This is not a cheaply made toy and is worth every penny, if not more! I can't imagine this thing ever wearing out.

The ERGO carrier also has several accessories (insert, front pouch, backpack, weather cover, changing pad, and more). There is one that I already know I have to have :D

They are sucking pads, and they do come in organic! They will help protect the carrier straps, and thus it's longevity (depending on your baby's chewing abilities, lol)

I have a little baby and she does like to suck on things and will soon enough be chewing on things, so these are absolutely on my wish list!

Okay, so I've rambled on and on. I hope that I've covered everything here. I'm sure I've missed something (I always do!) If I think of anything I'll be sure to add it here on in a new post when I get pics of my husband and daughter wearing the carriers :)

Thank you for reading this :) If you haven't worn your baby and would like to, I highly recommend this carrier.

I'll leave you now with a couple of pics of me wearing it with my two baby girls :) Sorry for the pic w/out the insert with my youngest... I was trying to hurry to get my husband to help take a quick pick before dinner one night :P (yes, i'm a slacker, I know) Also, notice how the carrier cradles and conforms to their little bodies, it looks so comfy, not harsh :)
